Changing our membership structure

We are proposing changes to our membership categories and fees.

Our voting members – those in the class of MInstP, FInstP and Hon.FInstP – are being asked to vote on these changes at the IOP's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 13 July 2017.

Following a year-long consultation with our members, we are proposing changes to our membership structure and fees to allow us to engage and better support our members. These changes are part of the exciting developments that will be taking place at the IOP in the coming months and years.

With approval from IOP's Council, the main changes we are proposing are:

1)  Simplifying our membership structure from seven to four categories

2)  A fee model that aligns with the proposed structure

3)  Introducing a fee for undergraduates and trainees to improve engagement and how we support them

These changes will allow us to support members by:

  • Creating an inclusive and equal membership for all physics professionals
  • Supporting professional development throughout an individual’s career
  • Simplifying our fee model and giving members a fairer structure
  • Improving the benefits of membership for undergraduates and trainees
  • Increasing our concession threshold so finance is not a barrier to progression
  • Building a community of professional members and supporting the wider community of all those who share our passion for physics

On these pages, we have outlined the changes we are proposing with further background information available here.

If you are a voting member (MInstP, FInstP and Hon.FInstP) you can vote on these changes at our AGM on 13 July or appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf at the meeting. To do so please visit the AGM proxy registration and voting site and enter your personal AGM Unique Voting Code (UVC) which is contained in the formal notice of the AGM which has been sent to all voting members by post and email on 8 June.
