Peter Saraga CBE FREng CPhys FInstP FIET

Past IOP President
For distinguished contributions to applied physics, sustained support for the Institute of Physics, and his leading role in advocacy for physics, higher education and science policy.

Peter Saraga has had a distinguished career in applied physics research culminating in his directorship, over 1992–2002, of Philips Research Laboratories UK, responsible for major research programmes in displays, wireless communications and interactive digital television.

Since that period, he has held a number of non-executive and advisory roles in areas such as STEM outreach, higher education and science policy.

As well as being a past president of the Institute of Physics from 2006–08, Peter has continued to support the work of the IOP and contributed much to the agenda of the organisation, most recently through membership of the board of IOP Enterprises.

His wider contributions to physics in the UK have come via his engagement with HEFCE, where he led the pilot study into Impact for Physics for REF2014, which shaped how impact would be assessed in that exercise, and went on to be a member of the Physics Panel for REF2014.

He was a member of the HEFCE Board from 2002–08 and has chaired their Advisory Group on Strategically Important and Vulnerable Subjects and their assessment panel for the UK Research Partnership Innovation Fund. He has also chaired the industry advisory panel for the Cockcroft Institute and an International Science benchmarking review at NPL.

He continues to be very active and a strong advocate for applied physics, and can be found making a difference to the debate wherever such issues arise at leadership level in the UK.
