Rolls Royce Group

For the creation, development and expansion of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) network, widely held to be the exemplary model for University / Industry interaction.

The Rolls-Royce network of University Technology Centres (UTC) has created a cross-cultural working environment for company and university staff in areas of basic science, applied research, staff training, and technology transfer, where the universities have benefitted from privileged access to Rolls-Royce capability bases and information networks.

The UTC network is widely recognised as the exemplar for efficient and effective university/ industry collaboration and has been vital in providing technology support for product development in addition to fundamental research. They operate with sharing capability and working on joint programmes. Many successful technology developments from the UTCs over the past 20 years can be seen in the commercially and technically successful rolls- Royce Trent Engines and many of the Company’s other products. The UTC model has been adopted overseas, and in addition to opening new centres in the UK, has developed UTCs and similar technology centres in Norway, Sweden, German, Italy, USA, Korea and Japan.
