Physicists working on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN have smashed together their first low-energy proton beams. At almost 2.30pm yesterday afternoon, Monday November 23, the ATLAS detector recorded the first particle collisions.

Robert Kirby-Harris, chief executive at the Institute of Physics, said, “We’re delighted to see that the LHC is back in operation and that we’re getting some early results coming through. Congratulations to all at CERN!”
