The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is facing a shortfall of £80 million in their budget over the next three years. The Institute of Physics is extremely concerned that, to cope with this shortfall, the STFC has produced a delivery plan that will lead to job losses at universities and three leading research laboratories; a 25 per cent cut in university grants; and withdrawal from a number of high-profile programmes such as the International Linear Collider. Some university physics departments across the UK will lose up to £750,000 in income, resulting in job losses and threatening vital areas of physics.

The Institute is pressing government for a moratorium on any cutbacks until its review into the health of physics, led by Professor Bill Wakeham, has reported in mid-summer of this year.
