STFC's Science Board held a Town Meeting on 3 March for members of the physics and astronomy community. Sir Peter Knight, Chair of the Science Board, explained the review process which has been undertaken to assign programmes to different categories of priority - "lower" priority programmes will be most at risk of funding cuts. A copy of his presentation can be found at http://www.stfc.ac.uk/STFCConsultation/comment.aspx. STFC invited the community to input their views by 21 March.
The Institute of Physics welcomes STFC's adoption of a more open, consultative approach to these extremely difficult decisions. However, we regret that such a short period has been allowed for the community to respond.
STFC’s Science Board has made clear that these are all worthwhile programmes. The Institute does not wish to comment publicly on individual programmes or the priorities assigned to them but we hope no irreversible decisions are made on key projects, until after Wakeham has reported.
