YOUNGSTERS SEE SCIENCE IN ACTION

IOP

PR40(07)

Mon, 29 October 2007

Did you know that butterfly wings hold the key to inventing new electronic displays? To find out how, Tamar Science Park has invited 200 students from across Devon and Cornwall to meet practising scientists on the Park at an Institute of Physics (IOP) event on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 November.

The students will enjoy a tour of the park and discover how science helps us with issues ranging from saving the lives of babies in the womb and diagnosing and treating heart diseases to designing submarines or predicting the weather.

The event is all part of Physics Forward, a new event for Year 11 students organised by the IOP, which gives youngsters the chance to meet young, professional scientists and see what a career in science is really like.

Students will be coming from 15 different schools across the South West and, as well as touring the site, will take part in Q & A sessions with physicists from local and national companies including BAE Systems, The Met Office and Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Nigel Halford, Chief Executive of Tamar Science Park, said: “This visit and programme epitomises the Park’s ethos of working closely with schools to excite and enthuse youngsters to think about science, in all its facets, as a potential career.  It is also a great opportunity for these young people to see science in action and I hope they take away with them a renewed passion for the subject.”

Alison Rivett, South West Regional Officer for the Institute of Physics, said: “Students choosing science for further and higher education can end up working in very exciting places.  TamarSciencePark is a great place to illustrate this to students that are on the cusp of making post-16 options.”

“People with a background in physics are needed to advance scientific knowledge.  The business sector, the public sector and the voluntary sector all benefit from advances in science and IOP is committed to ensuring today’s students are turned on to opportunities in science and, in particular, improving students’ experience of physics.”
