Winners of the Quantum Optics VI Poster Prize

Journal of Optics B: Quantum and Semiclassical Optics and Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics were proud to sponsor a poster competition at the Quantum Optics VI conference held at Krynica, Poland in June 2005.

Under- and post-graduate students who presented a poster at the conference were eligible for the prize. A selection panel made up of the meeting's invited speakers and chaired by Professor J H Eberly (Rochester University, USA) carefully considered the strong field before announcing the two winners:

• Rafal Demkowicz-Dobrzanski for his poster 'State estimation on correlated copies', and
• Silke Ospelkaus for her poster 'Quantum degenerate Fermi-Bose mixture of ⁴⁰K and ⁸⁷Rb'.

Each winner received a 50 Euro book voucher provided by the journals.

The committee also commended four posters for an Honourable mention:

• 'Statistical physics in number theory' presented by Anna Kubasiak
• 'Quantum communication through spin chains' presented by Pawel Kurzynski
• 'Analytical soliton solution in a coupled atomic-molecular BEC' by Bartlomiej Oles, and
• 'Superfluidity in the classical fields approximation' by Lukasz Zawitkowski

Congratulations to all the poster session participants and our special thanks to the selection panel for their involvement in this event. Journal of Optics B: Quantum and Semiclassical Optics and Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics will be merging in January 2006. Read on for further information.
