Abstract. ELectric and magnetic fields from radiofrequency sources are generated both deliberately and adventitiously. This review examines the nature of those fields and the practical aspects of field strength measurements including associated potential hazards. Dosimetric considerations underlying protection guidelines are discussed in the context of basic restrictions on exposure of induced current and energy absorption rate (SAR). Examples of field strengths from various sources are given for comparison with derived reference levels contained in guidelines. The relevance of field strength measurements to exposure assessment in terms of the basic restrictions is discussed, and estimates of SAR given for specific exposure situations.
