Abstract. A method has been developed to study the diffusion of fresh water into salt water using electrical conductivity cells in such a manner that it is possible to determine continuously, rapidly, and inexpensively what portion of any sample of the mixture came from the salt water, and what portion came from the fresh water. The method is one of comparison; an exact determination of the salt concentration of the salt water before mixing is not required. The method is restricted to the study of incompressible flow problems and subject to the limitations imposed by the use of water.
