Abstract. In this paper an automated methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching/learning process in basic courses at academic level is presented. The results of a 10-year long experimentation on students belonging to different scientific faculties of the University of Molise are discussed. According to the model developed here, a single numerical parameter provides synthetic information about the overall class knowledge level. Such a parameter allows single students to make a rough self-evaluation of their own knowledge level compared to that of their colleagues and it allows the teacher to judge the outcome of his teaching activity.
