Abstract. In this paper the authors have investigated analytically the use of the photoelectric effect as a means of enhancing the electrical conductivity of dust-laden gases and have shown that it is not a very efficient process for the range of temperatures (> 900°K) useful for magnetohydrodynamic generation of power. Some numerical results, for the special case of argon laden with barium oxide dust, have also been presented in the discussion.
