Abstract. Relativistic effects have been included in non-relativistic term energies in some recent work by relating to non-relativistic radial integrals. It is seen that the need for a non-relativistic term energy is principally one of labelling the eigenstates of the atomic system according to some single-configuration coupling scheme, which could be achieved by a coupling transformation from the basic jj-coupled schemes used in relativistic atomic structure calculations.
