The control of friction and wear is key to many biological functions. Examples are wide ranging. Some are well known, such as the friction and wear of hip and knee prosthetics, where the tribology clearly has a major impact on the success and life of the prosthetic, and is a strong function of the material used, whether metal, polymer or ceramic. However, there are numerous less obvious cases. For example, the role of monolayer fatty acid coatings on the surface of human hairs is fundamental to the behaviour of hair. Similarly, the friction of skin is of interest to the development of improved shaving strategies. Of course, there is much recent interest in the nanotribology of living organisms. This meeting will give an excellent snap shot of the current state-of-the-art in Biotribology.
