Forthcoming Institute Conferences

Date:11 September 2007 to 13 September 2007
Venue:Liverpool John Moores University
Organised by:The Instrument Science and Technology Group

Introduction

The fourteenth in the series of Conferences on Sensors & their Applications (S & A XIV) will take place at Liverpool John Moores University in September 2007.  This popular event follows previous Conferences in the series which began at Manchester in 1983, included the first of the highly successful Eurosensors Conferences at Cambridge in 1987 and at Southampton in 1998.  The latest (thirteenth) Conference was held at the University of Greenwich at Medway in 2005.

The S&A series of conferences provides an excellent opportunity to bring together scientists and engineers from academia, research institutes and industrial establishments to present and discuss the latest results in the field of sensors, instrumentation and measurement.

Conference Themes
Papers are invited in the following themes including but not restricted to:

Technologies

  • Advances in sensing materials
  • Nanotechnology for sensors and actuators
  • Smart sensors and interface electronics
  • MEMS and silicon fabrication techniques
  • Optical sensors
  • Biosensors
  • Imaging; Integrated actuators
  • Thick and thin film sensors
  • Chemical and gas sensors
  • Sensor modelling
  • Sensor packaging and assemblies

Applications Areas

  • Environmental sensing
  • Medical/healthcare sensing
  • Robotic and remote sensing
  • Tomography
  • Domestic electronics and smart homes
  • Crime prevention
  • Automotive and aerospace
  • Leisure industry and toys
  • Food and agriculture
  • Marine
  • Energy and Power

Conference Highlights

  • National and international invited speakers will present reviews on latest developments and state of the art.
  • Contributed oral papers
  • Contributed exhibited papers
  • Networking opportunities
  • A varied and exciting social programme drawing its theme from Liverpool's wealth of cultural and social attractions.

Exhibited Paper Prize
Prizes for the best exhibited papers will be awarded by the conference organising committee; sponsored by the Measurement Science and Technology Journal and the ISAT group.

Location and Venue
The conference will be held at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the award winning Peter Jost Enterprise Centre and James Parson Building situated at the heart of Liverpool.

Located in England's North West, Liverpool has excellent road, rail and air links. The University is easily reached via the M58, M56 and M62 motorways and has good express connections from most towns and cities in Britain (half hourly services to Manchester, hourly services to York and every two hours to London and Birmingham). Liverpool John Lennon Airport is just 8 miles from the City Centre and has regular scheduled flights from Belfast, Dublin, Cork, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Geneva and Paris.

In 2008, Liverpool will become the European City of Culture. In preparation for this award, Liverpool has transformed the city centre and water front, with the Albert Dock now among the UK's top leisure attractions. Liverpool is also home to two cathedrals, two football clubs and the most famous pop group in the world.

Social Programme
In tradition with previous S&A Conferences there will be a varied social programme.  This will include an informal welcome reception, a visit to one of Liverpool's Football Grounds (dependant on match fixtures) and a Conference Dinner in the one of the country's largest Victorian greenhouses 'Sefton Park Palm House'.

Exhibition
There is an opportunity for companies operating in the field of instrumentation and sensors to exhibit there products and services at the conference. Please contact Claire Garland claire.garland@iop.org for further information.

Submission of Papers and Conference Proceedings
Contributed papers on all aspects of the conference themes are requested. Contributions should be submitted by 14 March 2007. As with previous years, the Proceedings of the Conference will be published in an archive format and a CD-ROM for rapid reference will be produced. A Conference handbook will also be provided to all attendees on their Registration at the Conference itself.

Format for Preparation of Manuscript and Abstracts
Contributors are asked to provide
Electronic copy of the manuscript of between four and six pages (maximum)  including a 100 word (maximum) abstract, diagrams and figures in MS Word 97 or higher.

Papers should be prepared using Journal of Physics: Conference Series guidelines. Full instructions including the JPCS open access copyright form, templates in LaTeX and Microsoft Word and guidelines on graphics preparation, may be downloaded directly or, alternatively, follow the Guidelines for authors link in the orange panel on the left of the JPCS home page.

Authors should supply their electronic files to Claire Garland (e-mail: claire.garland@iop.org). Please do not send any files directly to Institute of Physics Publishing.

Prospective authors will be informed about their submission by 29 April. Both oral contributions and exhibited papers are regarded as full contributions to the conference and this will be reflected in their publication regardless of mode of presentation.
