The annual conference of the High Energy Particle Physics group of the Institute is an opportunity for the particle physics community to review progress in the field and look forward to future opportunities. The meeting has a strong national flavour and the parallel sessions offer the chance for our postgraduate research students to present their PhD thesis work. The meeting will take place at Lancaster University between the 31 March and 2 April 2008.
About Lancaster
Lancaster is the County Town of Lancashire, and there has been a settlement here since the Roman occupation. It is situated about three miles inland from Morecambe Bay, and is the most northerly town in Lancashire. It is about 20 miles south of the boundary of the Lake District National Park and sits due west of the Trough of Bowland.
Lancaster boasts many historic buildings including a 13th century Castle (built on the site of a Roman garrison) and an 11th century Priory Church. Lancaster was the site of the infamous Pendle Witch Trials in 1612, and the court based in the castle (the Lancaster Assizes) acquired a somewhat grisly reputation for enthusiastic use of the death penalty, for which the city became known as “The Hanging Town”. In the 18th century Lancaster became an important port and later an industrial centre, with a particular emphasis on the manufacture of linoleum. Much of the city’s grandest architecture was constructed with the profits of this industry, including the fine Williamson Park and Ashton Memorial.
Modern Lancaster is a bustling market town with thriving theatrical and musical scenes. It also has a wide range of good restaurants and pubs.
