Environmental Electrostatic 2 - Measurement Methods in Environmental Electrostatics
This half-day meeting will investigate past and present measurements in environmental electrostatics. It will include discussion of methods for determining the properties of atmospheric air and for monitoring changes in atmospheric electric fields. Motivation for this meeting comes from the centenary of C.T.R.Wilson's 1906 paper describing an instrument to measure the small electric current flowing vertically between the positively charged ionosphere and the earth's surface. The measurements initiated by Wilson's apparatus were continued by the UK Met Office from 1909-1979, and the data obtained have recently been re-discovered. This meeting bridges the old with the new - beyond the insights into the past atmospheric electrical climate these data offer, modern instruments suitable for future long term monitoring of environmental electrostatic changes will be discussed.
